The True Believer, by Eric Hoffer. An in-depth look at why people join mass movements, crusades, and become radicalized.

The Fountainhead, by Ayn Rand. Although a fiction novel about brilliant architect Howard Roark, this book explains a lot about the nature of collectivism and it's variants, and the motivations of the people who believe in it.

We the Living, by Ayn Rand. A fiction novel about a young girl caught up in the evils of Soviet Russia.

The Crowd:A Study of the Popular Mind, by Gustav Le Bon. In depth analysis of mob psychology.

The Road to Serfdom,by F.A. Hayek. A look at socialism and it's consequences.

Mere Christianity, by C.S. Lewis. An excellent starting point for people interested in becoming Christian.

The Reason for God, Belief in an Age of Skepticism, by Tim Keller. Skeptical of God's existence? Having trouble accepting that Jesus really was the son of God, and rose from the dead? This book will either change your mind, or help you see the plausibility of it all.

The Cost of Discipleship, by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Excellent study of what it means to be a Christian.

1984, by George Orwell. The dystopian classic about life in a society totally dominated by the government.

The Gulag Archipelago, by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Epic book about life in the old Soviet Russia prison camp system.
